Espresso machine cleaning: use the schedule for your exact model
“Clean it weekly” is not a substitute for the manual. Machines differ in cleaning alerts, cycles, filters, and descaling instructions. Build your routine from the exact model number and the water you use.

A routine has several different jobs
| Job | Why it matters | Where to verify steps |
|---|---|---|
| After-use wipe and rinse | Removes accessible milk residue and coffee grounds. | Steam-wand, basket, group-head and tray care sections in your manual. |
| Cleaning cycle / backflush | Uses the machine’s designed disc, detergent and button sequence when applicable. | Exact manual; not every machine uses the same cycle or alert. |
| Water filter replacement | Maintains the filter system and can affect the machine’s maintenance reminders. | Filter instructions and replacement interval for your model. |
| Descaling | Addresses mineral buildup from water; the schedule can vary with water hardness. | Descaling instructions and water-hardness guidance in the exact manual. |
Do not combine cleaning powder and descaler or improvise a cycle unless the manufacturer instructs it. Use only the specified cleaner and follow all steps, including rinse cycles.
What one model’s manual says
The US Bambino BES450 manual describes a clean-and-descale cycle and says the machine will indicate when it is expected. Its instructions include emptying the tray, preparing the water tank as directed, placing a large container beneath the group head and steam wand, then following the specified button sequence. That exact procedure is for this model; it is not a general method for every espresso machine.
The Bambino Plus manual also describes cleaning and descaling, but the buttons and alerts differ. Confirm BES450 versus BES500 and region/version before following a guide or video.
Keep a small maintenance record
A note on the machine or in your phone can record the model, date of filter change, cleaning-cycle alert, descaling date, and water source. This helps you follow the maker’s schedule without guessing from a generic calendar. If the display shows an unfamiliar warning, check its meaning in the official manual before clearing it.
When buying a used machine, ask for this history and compare it with the model’s maintenance instructions. A missing record does not diagnose a fault, but it is useful context for a service estimate.
Before cleaning
- Read the complete cleaning section for the exact model.
- Check whether the current alert is for cleaning or descaling.
- Remove the water filter only when the manual instructs you to.
- Use the required cleaner and container size; allow time for the rinse cycle.
- Stop and contact the manufacturer or service provider if the machine behaves differently from the manual’s expected cycle.
